Stephen W. Smith

Stephen Smith is an executive vice president and head of GSE underwriting on the GSE Underwriting team at Walker & Dunlop, based in Needham, Massachusetts. In his role, he is responsible for overseeing the structuring and underwriting activities for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac multifamily loans with a focus on conventional, affordable, and seniors housing.

Prior to Walker & Dunlop, Mr. Smith was chief underwriter for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac conventional, affordable, and seniors housing loans. In addition, he served as a member of the Fannie Mae Affordable Housing Market Dynamics Committee, including two years as lender chair. Mr. Smith was also a member of Freddie Mac’s Targeted Affordable Housing Seller Servicer Council. Before that, Mr. Smith served as a senior vice president of CWCapital, which was acquired by Walker & Dunlop in 2012. Prior to CWCapital, Mr. Smith was employed with Berkshire Mortgage Finance (now Newmark), where he oversaw the due diligence for and underwriting of multifamily and seniors housing loans with a focus on Fannie Mae programs. Before that, Mr. Smith was employed by Shawmut Bank (now part of Bank of America) in various real estate lending capacities.

Mr. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Ohio Wesleyan University and his master’s degree in business from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Management at Babson College.
