Ken Buchanan, Executive Vice President and FHA Finance Group Head, oversees all aspects of Walker & Dunlop’s lending through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Mr. Buchanan has been underwriting FHA loans since 2004 and is an approved FHA MAP Underwriter for multifamily programs and approved Lean underwriter for healthcare programs.

Before being promoted to Executive Vice President and FHA Group Head, Mr. Buchanan was the Director of FHA Underwriting and the HUD-approved Chief Underwriter for Walker & Dunlop. Since 2013, Mr. Buchanan successfully managed an FHA pipeline that resulted in over 930 closed loans totaling nearly $13 billion. He has nearly 20 years of experience in structuring a wide range of FHA loans for both multifamily and healthcare properties and, he has mentored numerous underwriter trainees that have gone on to earn designations. Beyond the company, Mr. Buchanan has served as the Mortgage Bankers Association’s FHA Committee Chair, Vice Chair of the Multifamily Counsel, and he was a member of the Multifamily Steering Committee. In addition, he created and chaired the FHA Chief Underwriter Forum, is past President of the Eastern Lenders Association and Board member of the Southeast Mortgagee Advisory Council. Mr. Buchanan is frequently invited to participate as a speaker at FHA-related conferences and seminars relating to HUD policy for both multifamily and healthcare topics.

Mr. Buchanan earned a Bachelor of Science in business administration and finance from the University of Delaware. Mr. Buchanan is also a licensed real estate appraiser with over eight years’ experience, performing appraisals and market studies on a nationwide basis, specifically in the healthcare and senior housing industries.
