Ken Buchanan is an executive vice president and head of FHA Finance at Walker & Dunlop and is based in western Maryland. In this role, he oversees all aspects of the firm’s lending through HUD and leads the FHA finance platform’s underwriting operations nationwide. He has 23 years of experience structuring FHA loans for multifamily and healthcare properties and is an approved FHA MAP underwriter for multifamily programs and LEAN underwriter for healthcare programs. Since 2013, he has managed an FHA pipeline resulting in more than 1,215 closed loans totaling nearly $19 billion.

Prior to his current role, Buchanan served as senior vice president and director of FHA underwriting and as HUD-approved chief underwriter at Walker & Dunlop. Before that, he served as senior vice president and chief underwriter for the Eastern region at CWCapital, which was later acquired by Walker & Dunlop. Earlier in his career, he served as an underwriter at M&T Bank and an appraiser at Valuation & Information Group, where he performed appraisals and market studies for healthcare and seniors housing properties nationwide.

Buchanan earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and finance from the University of Delaware. He is a licensed real estate appraiser and has served as chair of the Mortgage Bankers Association FHA Committee, vice chair of the Multifamily Council, and a member of the Multifamily Steering Committee. He also created and chaired the FHA Chief Underwriter Forum and has served as president of the Eastern Lenders Association and a board member of the Southeast Mortgagee Advisory Council.
