Howard Smith
Board Member
Mr. Smith has been a member of our Board since July 2010, and previously served as our president from 2015 until his retirement in January 2024. He previously served as our executive vice president & chief operating officer from July 2010 to April 2015, when he was promoted to president.
Mr. Smith joined Walker & Dunlop in November 1980 and began serving as a member of the management team in 1988. Mr. Smith served as Walker & Dunlop, LLC’s executive vice president & chief operating officer from 2004 to April 2015, when he was promoted to president. He also has served as a board member of Walker & Dunlop, LLC or its predecessors since 2004. As president, Mr. Smith was responsible for our Multifamily, FHA Finance, Capital Markets and Property Sales groups.
Mr. Smith is a member of the National Multi Housing Council Board of Directors and the Advisory Board to the Williams School of Commerce Economics and Politics at Washington and Lee University. He served as chairman of the Advisory Council to the Fannie Mae DUS Peer Group from 2007 to 2008, again from 2009 to 2010, and again from 2013 to 2014. Mr. Smith is a former trustee and finance committee chair of Episcopal High School and a former senior warden at Christ Church Georgetown. Mr. Smith earned his Bachelor of Arts in economics from Washington & Lee University.
